Sauron and the downfall of Númenor

Shortly after Sauron had the Rings of Power forged, his plan for the conquest of Middle-earth was interrupted by the arrival of the Dúnedain, Men from the island of Númenor in the West. Sauron hated the Dúnedain for aiding the Elves during the War of the Jewels against his master Morgoth. He also feared their power as they established more and more colonies in western Middle-earth, although he snared three of the Lords of Númenor by giving them three of the Nine Rings of Power forged for Men. Through the power of the Rings, Sauron enslaved these Lords of Men and turned them into Ringwraiths (see “The Ringwraiths, Loyal Servants of Sauron” later in this chapter for details).

During this time of contact, Sauron used subterfuge and cunning to win over the king of Númenor, Ar-Pharazôn, and wreak havoc on the Dúnedain. Sauron used the king’s fear of death to convince him to worship Morgoth, and even to make war on the Valar in the Blessed Realm (see Chapter 5 for details).

Ilúvatar punished the Dúnedain’s attempt to break the ban on traveling to Aman with an armada of ships by removing Aman from the Circles of the World. This caused a storm that not only sank Númenor but also destroyed Sauron’s form. Unfortunately, his dark spirit survived and passed as a shadow over the sea until it reached the stronghold of Barad-dûr in Mordor. There, no longer able to take on a pleasing shape, Sauron assumed for the first time the terrifying form of the Eye of Sauron, a huge single eye rimmed in flames. This is the form that Sauron takes much later during the War of the Ring.
